MY EUROPE BASE :: ÜBER-CONTINENTAL & ÜBER-CONVENIENT!
My Europe Base – our Zell-Mosel apartment house
August 2013: We've just had a delightful 2 weeks in Zell, doing preparation to organise small groups. We met local and regional guides, inspected nearby apartment houses, tested thermal baths, sweated in saunas and have some fabulous images.
Oz-Europe for $1200-1300 AUD return. Fly Scoot to Singapore or Air Asia to Kuala Lumpur. Then to Frankfurt, Amsterdam or Paris on Emirates, Etihad or Qatar, all top airlines. We just flew Air Asia to KL and Qatar Airways on to Paris. Allow a stopover each way so you have some margin if any flight is delayed.
Schengen Visas allow 90 days out of 180 in Europe: Nationals from many countries outside Europe including Australia, New Zealand, US and Canada are issued with Schengen Visas on entry. These allow stays up to 90 days in any 180 day period in the countries that are in the Schengen Convention. To stay over 90 days in Europe, you'll need to spend time too in NON-Schengen countries. These include Great Britain, Ireland, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Turkey and Morocco (most have flights from Hahn). Otherwise apply ahead for a longer stay visa for Germany.
Availability 2014 calender online. On our apartments & rates page you can check to see when we have availability. We can usually hold dates for you for a short time while you make arrangements.
Keep Travellin' Keith!: A sprightly flag-bearer for senior travellers, Aussie Keith Wright stayed in Zell June 2012 en-route from Paris to Dresden. Keith, aged 95, likes travelling Europe independently. He met the Mayor and Wine Queen and made the local news.
'Eventful Woman' writes from Zell: NZ writer Jocelyn 'Eve' Watkin stayed Oct-Nov 2011. Here is her blog with 12 stories from Zell: eventfulwoman.blogspot.com/p/writer-in-residence Also a good read is Jocelyn's NZ Herald-Sunday article: 'Heaven in Zell'
Wi-Fi broadband internet is free. A laser printer is available for printing documents and itineraries. We offer free loan of T-mobile web sticks for recharge at 5 Euro per day so you can be connected while you're out. Apartments have flat-screen TV-DVDs and our satellite receiver gets hundreds of channels.
Walk the Mosel Hohenweg (High Walk)! This is one of the world's oldest signposted long-distance walks (est.1910). Trier to Koblenz is 185km following the Hunsruck side of the Mosel. Zell is midway with one day treks to the too-cute village of Beilstein or Traben-Trabach with its Art-Nouveau riverside mansions. Return by bus or ferry. While the bike path follows the river, the Hohenweg takes the ridges with spectacular views, dropping down to cross tributaries and call in at key towns including Zell. For a taste, here is a link to a Dutchman's 30 page pictorial report who did the walk over 3 winters: 2003-2005Moselhoehenweg and information on the sections from Zell: zellerland.de (hohenweg)
Another long distance walk of 105km is the Ausonius Wander Weg from Bingen on the Rhein, crossing the Hunsruck Plateau to Trier. Ausonius was a Roman Consul 310-395 who trekked this way. One of his poetry works was the Mosella describing life and scenery on the Mosel. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ausonius

Nearby Bullay DB is on the Mosel Line and sees about 25 trains per day each way – travelling south and west to Trier, Luxembourg and Saarbrucken, or north and east to Koblenz, Koln, Mainz and Frankfurt.
For long journeys 'Savings Fares' and advance purchase are available most days - Book 1 to 3 mths ahead (fares can go up at midnight typically one month and 2 weeks prior) on www.bahn.de and travel between our local station, Bullay DB and Paris Est from 39 Euro (fastest time 3 hrs 40 min). Also deals to Amsterdam and other cities within similar distance using ICE and TGV express. A little more to Rome, Zurich, Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Copenhagen travelling on CNL City Nightline or EN Euronight Services – many of these stop in nearby Koblenz. Sleeper berths cost extra.
Regional, State, National and other day passes.
Regional passes cover up to 5 people typically for under 20 Euro for one day of travel on regional and local trains and buses. Journeys of 100+km can be done depending on the region's boundaries. Bullay is at the western end of the Koblenz-VRM region. Handily it neighbours the Trier-VRT region and both passes can be used from Bullay.
Lander passes for every state give unlimited local/regional train and bus travel any day from 0900 until 0300 next morning (Sat-Sun can start earlier). Cost 22 Euro, plus 4 Euro each extra person (up to 5). Under 15s free. Our State is Rhineland-Pfalz and the 'der Takt' pass includes neighbouring Saarland and several French border points including Wissembourg in Alsace.
The Quer-durch-land-ticket can be used similarly for all Germany. It costs 44 + 6 per extra.
For Sat or Sun, an all-Germany 'Schoenes Wochenende' (Happy Weekend) group day-pass is 42 Euro for up to 5 people.
All day passes exclude IC and ICE trains but slower trains run regularly along regional and all traditional main lines. No seat reservations needed. Use bahn.com to plan journeys and tick the 'local trains' box to omit IC and ICE trains.
Passes can be bought from station ticket machines in advance or on the day (option for English). If staying on the Mosel, the Trier-VRM, Koblenz-VRT, Rheinland-Saar-derTakt, Luxembourg and Lux-Saar-Lorraine day passes are all attractive.
Fly around Europe, the Med and North Africa from Zell:
Nearby Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN) offers low-cost direct flights to 50+ destinations and is #1 continental hub for Ryanair, Europe's biggest budget airline with near 300 B737s. A local bus service to/from Hahn Airport terminal runs to Zell 9 x a day, taking 35 mins. Taxi is 20 mins taking a shorter route. Visit our destinations ex Hahn page, Skyscanner and Ryanair for more ideas and details. Dests: Europe, Med & Morocco.
Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) Frankfurt City and Germany's #1 airport are just over 2 hours away by rail with a change at Koblenz. Book your ticket online at bahn.de to Bullay DB station. Regular fare is 29 E but book 2+ weeks in advance and it can be 19 E. Bullay DB is 6km from Zell-Mosel and the local bus meets most trains. Cabs are available too. The bus goes past the house (but the stops are 400m in either direction). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frankfurt_Airport
Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN) is also easy to reach by rail from Bullay DB with a change in Koblenz (2.20 hrs, cost 19-29 Euro) and is Germany's #6 busiest airport with many low-cost carriers (Easyjet, TuiFly, Wizzair etc) and charter flights offering 1 or 2 week returns to 'countless' holiday destinations. Dests: Europe, Mid-East & North Africa. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cologne_Bonn_Airport
Mosel vs Australia's Blue Mtns temps (info for Aussies!): The Mosel's summer temps match Katoomba's. But Mosel winters av 4-5 C cooler. Snow is occasional. Shortest days are light by 8am and dark soon after 5pm. Many claim the Mosel is the sunniest region of Germany.
In Feb 2012 the froze for the first time in nearly 30 years. Nights were 5C

It's not far to many of Germany's attractions, also Lorraine and Alsace in NE France, Luxembourg, Belgium and Holland.
Our self-contained Zell apartments include the open-plan 'Mosel Studio', 2 x one-bedroom 'River View' apartments and our gorgeous 'Mosel Balcony' with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. All look over the Mosel to the sister village of Zell-Kaimt and beyond to a landscape of steep vineyards and forested hills.

It's just 2 minutes walk to the pedestrian precinct of Zell with its many wine cellars, cafes, restaurants, shops and the Zellerland regional tourism office (info in English, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian etc). Our marvellous keyholder and former house owner Elsbeth lives on site in the 5th apartment, welcomes guests and can be called upon if needed.
Online there's much more to find about Zell-Mosel, including videos on Youtube and images on Flickr (search for 'Zell Mosel'). See many more images on our intro & gallery page.
Our aim is to grow a small network of brilliantly located 'Europe Bases'. Owners can contact us if they think their place matches our concept. Many guests from Australia, NZ and the Americas like to experience Europe from a convenient base. It is good sense to offer special deals for long stay guests!
From Zell an der Mosel:
Explore independently: Explore Near and Explore Far from your base in Zell an der Mosel, superbly located for buses, trains (Bullay DB station), day river cruises, day coach tours, biking, hiking, car rental – and low-cost flights.
Zell is mid-way for both the famous 200km Mosel Bikepath (Radweg) and the Mosel High Walk (Höhen-Weg), one of the world's earliest signposted treks, opened in 1910. The Moselsteig is a new long distance hike from France to Koblenz opening in 2013.
Zell-Mosel location: With Frankfurt city 120 km distant, some city-seekers might suspect Zell is 'in the middle of nowhere'. However, while we enjoy the surrounding atmosphere of the river, vineyards, hills and countryside, with no cities within 50 km, there are near 30 cities within a 50 to 150 km radius: Trier, Koblenz, Luxembourg, Liege (BE), Maastricht (NL), Thionville (FR), Metz (FR), Sarrebourg (FR), Saarbrucken, Kaiserslautern, Aachen, Bonn, Koln, Dusseldorf, Wiesbaden, Frankfurt, Mainz, Worms, Ludwigshafen, Mannheim, Darmstadt, Siegen, Limburg, Giessen, Heidelberg, Karlsruhe and Speyer. Within a further 50 km (out to a 200 km radius) are: Nancy (FR), Strasbourg (FR), Verdun (FR), Charleville-Mezieres (FR), Namur (BE), Charleroi (BE), Brussels (BE), Eindhoven (NL), Stuttgart, Pforzheim, Heilbronn, Ludwigsburg, Wurzburg, Dortmund, Bochum, Essen and Duisburg. Within 400km are Zurich, Munich, Leipzig, Berlin, Hamburg, Amsterdam, Paris and many more.
Add to that over 100 towns and villages of interest with a day's distance, the Rivers Mosel, Rhine (and famed Rhine Gorges), Saar, Lahn, Kyll, Nahe and Neckar, while for castles, there's Burg Eltz, Cochem, Bernkastel and dozens more. And to get around all this, regional and state rail/bus day passes are incredible value (see info to left).
You can also see a lot of regional sights by taking day coach tours from Zell for 20 to 30 Euro (Apr to Oct). See our explorenear page.
My Europe Base owners: Ralph and Olga bought the Zell house in 2009 with the plan to offer long-stays to appeal to travellers from afar and make it possible to stay in Europe for 1-2-3 months or more.
Please enjoy browsing our website, contact us if you'd like to discuss further – and may we invite you to “Live the Continental Life” by plonking yourself on Rhineland's Mosel some time soon!

“Delightful, Charming, Picturesque” * * * * * Reviewed 9 November 2013 for a stay in October 2013 by Georgia
This is our third stay here, so I think that says a lot. We stayed in River View 2. Each morning we awoke to see the beautiful Mosel River with the grape vines bathed in golden sunlight and winemakers busily harvesting. What a view to enjoy from the comfort of your home away from home with your morning cup of coffee. The apartments are perfect, well equipped(full kitchen in this apartment). WiFi and satellite tv in each apartment. The location cannot be beat. Walk out the front door and in front of you is The Mosel with it's graceful swans beckoning tourists and locals for a treat or two. Turn right and a few steps down is an inticing outdoor/indoor wine cafe'. We were there for federweisser season( the first fermentation of wine-a cloudy refreshing sweet beverage traditionally served with hot onion pie-zweibelkuchen) so this was a special treat. The wines in this area are tops. There are so many wonderful restaurants within short walking distance. Don't hesitate to take the bridge across the river to the other side where you will find many good restaurants and vintners. The Globus megastore is easily reached by bus, bike or auto. You will find quite an array of baked goods, meats, cheese and all grocery items. Be sure and read the guestbook, previous guests have left many helpful tips and hints. The rooms are quite immaculate and I believe you would find the value of this location, the town of Zell and the local people to be as difficult to leave as we did. Isn't that a sign of a great vacation?
