Last-Minute and Early-Bird specials on our smaller Studio apartment: While our premier Balcony apartment is very popular and mostly booked up, our comfy and cosy Studio isn't getting as many bookings as we'd like. Therefore we've dropped rates to 250 and 300 Euro per week for remaining Spring-Summer 2013 availability and introduced Early-Bird specials for the winter months and into 2014. See our apartments page. (Apr 13)

Fly from Australia to Europe for under $1200 AUD return: Book 'low-cost' Scoot from either Sydney or Gold Coast to Singapore (it's owned by Singapore Airlines) from $138-199 each way when they're having a sale. Book separately a return fare from Singapore to Frankfurt, Amsterdam or Paris - often $800-900 in AUD on Emirates' Singapore web site www.emirates.com.sg. Try also similar match ups with Air Asia, Etihad and Qatar Airways.

Schengen Visas, 90 days out of 180 in Europe: Nationals from many countries outside Europe including Australia, New Zealanders, US and Canadians are issued with Schengen Visas on entry to Europe. These entitle a visitor to stay up to 90 days in any 180 day period within the countries that are signatories to the Schengen Convention. So if you plan to stay over 90 days in Europe, you'll need to plan for spending time too in NON-Schengen countries. Your choices include Great Britain, Ireland, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Turkey and Morocco. Otherwise it's a complex process to get a longer stay visa for Germany, France or another Schengen country. If you want to have a very long stay, think about 270 days (9 months) - spending from the first 180 days uo to 90 days in and at least 90 days out (eg in UK, Ireland and other non-Schengen countries) while you wait for the 180 to pass – then you can stay another 90 days in the Schengen Zone. This gives a total of 6 months out of 9 in the Schengen Zone.

My Europe Base can help suggest rental plans to fit around the Schengen requirements, taking advantage of the flights from Hahn to UK, Ireland, Morocco, Eastern Europe and Cyprus.

Keep Travellin' Keith Wright!: A sprightly flag-bearer for senior travellers, Australian Keith Wright stayed a few nights in Zell in June 2012 en-route from Paris to Dresden. Keith, aged 95, likes travelling Europe independently by trains and on Busabout (a hop-on-hop-off bus network). Keith met the Mayor and Wine Queen and made the news in the local papers. We hope Keith plans to stay longer in Zell-Mosel on his next trip and have some time to relax. In Australia, Keith has been described by the press as the world's oldest backpacker. Keep travellin' Keith!

Who stays with My Europe Base? Many of our guests are Australians and NZders on long stays looking for the 'home-away-from-home' experience in Europe, typically basing in Zell for about a month. We also see many Europeans on short stays and Canadians and Americans for a week or two.

'Eventful Woman' writes from Zell: NZ writer Jocelyn 'Eve' Watkin stayed in My Europe Base on the Mosel River for 4 weeks in Oct-Nov 2011. Here is her blog with stories from and around Zell: eventfulwoman.blogspot.com/p/writer-in-residence Click to read Jocelyn Watkin's 2 page travel feature in the NZ Herald-Sunday: 'Heaven in Zell' travel feature in NZ Herald

Wi-fi broadband internet is installed - this is free to guests. There is also a laser printer that can be borrowed for printing documents and itineraries. We also offer the free loan of T-mobile web sticks for recharge at 5 Euro per day of use so you can be connected while you're out and about all over Germany. We installed flat-screen TV-DVDs in Feb 2012 and have a satellite receiver to get hundreds of channels.

Walk the Mosel Hohenweg (High Walk)! This is one of the world's oldest signposted long-distance walks (est.1910). Trier to Koblenz is 185km following the Hunsruck side of the Mosel. Zell is midway with one day treks to the too-cute village of Beilstein or Traben-Trabach with its Art-Nouveau riverside mansions. Return by bus or ferry. While the bike path follows the river, the Hohenweg takes the ridges with spectacular views, dropping down to cross tributaries and call in at key towns including Zell. For a taste, here is a link to a Dutchman's 30 page pictorial report who did the walk over 3 winters: 2003-2005Moselhoehenweg and information on the sections from Zell: zellerland.de (hohenweg)

Another long distance walk of 105km is the Ausonius Wander Weg from Bingen on the Rhein, crossing the Hunsruck Plateau to Trier. Ausonius was a Roman Consul 310-395 who trekked this way. One of his poetry works was the Mosella describing life and scenery on the Mosel. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ausonius

Live the Continental Life!

My Europe Base offers delightful, bright and affordable apartments for short or long stays. Our first property is our own in the lively winemaker town of Zell on the Mosel River in Germany's romantic Rheinland, close to the Koblenz-Trier rail line and Ryanair's Hahn Airport hub. It's not far to France, Luxembourg and Belgium. The Zell apartments include the comfy 'Mosel Studio', 2 x one-bedroom 'River View' and our gorgeous 'Mosel Balcony' a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom home-away-from-home. All look over the Mosel.

With our aim to grow a small network of 'bases', owners of apartments in Europe are invited to contact us if they think their place suits our concept for all or some of the year. Many long stay guests from Australia, NZ and the Americas like to experience Europe outside local peak holiday periods and to have a convenient base while there. So it makes good sense to offer deals for long stay guests in quieter periods!

MY EUROPE BASE @ ZELL an der MOSEL

Explore the Continent near and far from your own ideal base in Zell an der Mosel, a vibrant traditional vintner town (number 2 for wine-making in the Mosel Valley) in the heart of Europe, midway between Koblenz and Trier, and near N.E. France (Lorraine, Alsace), Luxembourg, Belgium and Holland.

Zell is superbly located for travel by bus, train (6km by frequent bus to Bullay DB station), day river cruises, day coach tours, bicycle, boots, rental car – and in an enviable position for low-cost air travel (see box below). Zell is the mid-way point for both the famous 200km Mosel Bikepath (Mosel Radweg) and the Mosel High Walk (Mosel-Höhen-Weg), one of the world's earliest signed long-distance walking trails, opened in 1910.

Fly around Europe, the Med and North Africa from Zell:

Nearby Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN) offers low-cost direct flights to 50+ destinations and is one of the largest continental hubs for Ryanair, Europe's biggest budget airline with near 300 Boeing 737s. A local bus service to/from Hahn Airport terminal runs to Zell 9 x a day, taking 35 mins. Taxi is 20 mins taking a shorter route. Visit our destinations ex Hahn page and www.ryanair.com for more ideas and details. Dests: Europe, Med & Morocco.

Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) Frankfurt City and Germany's #1 airport are just over 2 hours away by rail with a change at Koblenz. Book your ticket online at bahn.de to Bullay DB station. Regular fare is 29 E but book 2+ weeks in advance and it can be 15 E. Bullay DB is 6km from Zell-Mosel and the local bus meets most trains. Cabs are available too. The bus goes past the house (but the stops are 400m in either direction). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frankfurt_Airport

Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN) is also easy to reach by rail from Bullay DB with a change in Koblenz (2.20 hrs, cost 19-29 Euro) and is Germany's #6 busiest airport with many low-cost carriers (Easyjet, TuiFly, Wizzair etc) and charter flights offering 1 or 2 week returns to 'countless' holiday destinations. Dests: Europe, Mid-East & North Africa. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cologne_Bonn_Airport

Rail around Europe from Zell (Bullay DB station):

Nearby Bullay DB is on the Mosel Inter-City Line and sees about 25 trains per day each way travelling to Trier, Luxembourg, Koblenz and Koln. Many more of Europe's major cities can be reached with only one change.

'Savings Fares' and advance purchase are available most days - Book ahead (fares can go up at midnight typically one month and 2 weeks prior) on www.bahn.de and travel between our local station, Bullay DB and: Paris Est from 29 Euro (fastest time 3 hrs 40 min) / Amsterdam and other NL cities 29 E / Brussels 29 E / Dresden 29 E / Passau 29 E / Hamburg 34 E / Berlin 40 E / Warsaw 39 E / Rome 63 E^ / Zurich 49 E^ / Vienna 53 E^ / Prague 49 E^ / Budapest 53 E^ / Copenhagen 53 E^. These examples include travel on IC, ICE and TGV trains. ^Longer journeys typically involve travel on CNL City Nightline or EN Euronight Services (sleeper berths extra).

'Quer-durch-land-tickets', 'Happy Weekend' tickets and other passesThe new 'Quer-durch-land-ticket' can be used for any day from 0900 day one until 0300 day two for travel on the ever-present RE trains (not IC or ICE). It costs 44 Euro plus 6 Euro per extra person. If travelling Sat and/or Sun, an all-Germany 'Happy Weekend' (Schones Wochende) group day-pass is about 40 Euro for up to 5 people (but no riding on IC or ICE trains). See www.bahn.com Inexpensive regional and state day passes can be bought from station ticket machine in advance or on the day (option in English). Check the Koblenz VRT, Rheinland State, Luxembourg or Lux-Saar-Lorraine day passes. Most of these passes can be used on any day of the week. Another deal we discovered is for over 65s in Belgium, just 5.30 Euro for any return ticket anywhere in the country on most days.

Zell-Mosel location: With Frankfurt city 120 km distant, some city-seekers might suspect Zell is 'in the middle of nowhere'. However, while we enjoy the surrounding atmosphere of the river, vineyards, hills and countryside, with no cities within 50 km, there are 20 cities within a 150 km radius: Trier, Luxembourg, Thionville (FR), Metz (FR), Saarbrucken, Kaiserslautern, Aachen, Bonn, Koln, Wiesbaden, Ludwigshafen, Mainz, Mannheim, Darmstadt, Siegen, Limburg and Heidelberg. Add to that over 100 towns and villages of interest, the Rivers Mosel, Rhine (and famed Rhine Gorges), Saar, Lahn, Kyll and Neckar, while for castles, there's Burg Eltz, Cochem, Bernkastel and dozens more. So Zell is not remote! And to get around all this, regional and state rail/bus day 'Lander' passes are incredible value. You can also see a lot of regional sights by taking inexpensive day coach tours from Zell from under 20 Euro (Apr to Oct). See our explorenear page.

Our house of 5 attractive apartments looks over the Mosel River and is just 2 minutes walk to the historic pedestrian precinct of Zell an der Mosel with its many wine cellars, cafes, restaurants, shops and the Zellerland regional tourism office (info in English, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian etc) www.zellerland.de. Our Zell keyholder and former house owner Elsbeth lives on site (top floor apartment), welcomes guests and can be called upon if needed.

There's much more to find about Zell online, including videos on Youtube and images on Flickr (search for 'Zell Mosel'). See many more images on our intro & gallery page.

My Europe Base is Australian owned, commencing in 2010: We bought the Zell house as our first location with the plan to connect further properties to create a small network of appealing long-stay accommodations in places ideal for basing.

Rates 1-2 weeks: Short stay 2013 holiday rates range between 200 and 700 Euro a week depending on apartment and season. Stays from 2 nights are possible. Stays of 2 weeks attract a small discount.

Rates 4+ weeks: Long stay 2013 rental rates are charged in Australian Dollars (because most of our guests are from there) and range between $200 and $700 a week depending on season. This gives a 20-25% discount to the short stay Euro rates.

Last-minute: We are negotiable for late bookings that match with spare availability. See the calendar on our apartments page.

Please enjoy browsing our website, contact us if you'd like to discuss further – and may we invite you to “Live the Continental Life” some time soon!

WOW! IT WAS BEAUTIFUL, EXCELLENT, THANKS! Good location, very pleasant look, comfortable. Stay 3 days with 12 y.o. Child”. Oleg, Russia (Oct 10)

Excellent base for touring the vineyards Ideally situated with wonderful views over the river and just a short walk to the restaurants, shops and vineyards of Zell. Nearby car parking is easy and free. The apartment was well maintained and spotless.” Michael UK (Aug 10)

What a great holiday we had! Zell is just great for everything, bars, restaurants, trains, cheap food etc. cycle tracks... in fact everything you could wish for. We really loved the house, and it was perfect, extremely clean and well looked after. We did so much, caught trains to Koblenz and Luxembourg, cycled for a day etc. Elsbeth was extremely pleasant when she greeted us and you have a really good person looking after your property for you. Thank you again, we would love to come again some time.” Diane, England (Sep 10)

Just a note to say how we enjoyed Zell. The apartment was lovely and Elsbeth so kind and helpful. I have never been to Germany but found the area so pretty and the people were very friendly. I wish we had booked for longer!” Thankyou, J, England (Aug 10)

Just to say thanks for letting us stay at your apartment. We had a nice relaxing few days there after a week chasing around all over Germany. Not least thanks to Elsbeth.” Robert, England (Aug 10)

We really enjoyed our stay at Zell. It was our first time to visit the Mosel. The house was very nice and clean, with a beautiful view. It was really a pity we could not stay longer. Thanks for you and Elsbeth for the good service.” regards, Marieke, Holland (Jul 10)

"Great place to stay. Beds very comfortable and the entire place was immaculate. Would definitely stay here again." Pam USA (Sep 10)

Our stay was so great, we love Zell and have recommended it to everyone. The (Mosel Balcony) apartment was more than expected and the Zell folks are so friendly. We had a lot of fun sampling all the Zell wine. Thank you so much for letting us use your beautiful apartment.” Brandi, USA (Jan 11)

A great base for a peaceful holiday for two. We stayed at the 'River View' (one-bedroom) apartment, which is suitable for two. As the name suggests, it has a great view of the Mosel, is in a town which has all the facilities you need and is right in the heart of a great wine-producing area with great scenery. The apartment is compact but has all the facilities you need, is well-maintained and is kept scrupulously clean by Elsbeth, who gave us a very warm welcome and couldn't have been more helpful to us. We'd love to stay again if we get the chance! " John UK (Dec-Jan 11)

5 out of 5. We've stayed in many apartments and cottages and this was definitely one of the best, immaculately clean, great location, good facilities and most of all the welcome from Elsbeth, the perfect hostess who was always there to help but never intrusive and a great sense of humour. We stayed in the Mosel balcony which had a wonderful view of the river and surrounds, and as someone who enjoys a glass of wine the view of vineyards from the bathroom was a real bonus! Many thanks! ” Jon and Sara UK (Mar 11)

We stayed at a perfect location in Zell Mosel. A very pretty, unspoilt village on the Mosel river. The apartment was spotlessly clean. Wonderful scenery from the windows of the apartment. Nearest train station about 3km. Buses readily available. Frankfurt Hahn airport 25 minutes by taxi. Most people only speak German but the cafes and restaurants will speak a little English. Plenty of trips available from the Town Hall, Luxembourg, Cochem, Bernkastel Kues, Paris to name a few. Very reasonably prices. Cyclists and hikers paradise. Hire bikes locally.” Value 5/5, Cleanliness 5/5, Service 5/5, Sleep Quality 5/5 As submitted to Trip Advisor. (June 11)

Great Value. Our family (2 adults + 2 children) stayed at this apartment for 4 nights and we were very pleased throughout the whole stay. It's great value and we want to come back at some point to explore more of beautiful Mosel.”.. Ainars, Latvia (July 11)

We are just back from staying in Zell - in your charming apartment with the most wonderful scenic balcony. It was wonderful to sit at breakfast and dinner and watch the boats and vessels go by. We fell in love with the Mosel area and are already planning a return - but for longer - with lots of activities, like cycling and hill walking. Elsbeth was a wonderful host and her local knowledge made our stay extra enjoyable. Thank you so much for the opportunity!” Bill and Marianne, Scotland (July 11)

My Europe Base is exactly the way we treated our balcony apartment in Zell. It was our intention to "Live like a local" During our 3 1/2 week stay, if we wanted to eat in and enjoy a bottle of wine whilst looking out over the Mosel we did, or if we felt like eating out we did with a huge range of quality restaurants' to choose from only a short stroll from the apartment. What a life! The apartment was great, location excellent, Elsbeth was an absolute delight she couldn't do enough for us, we will certainly be back, thanks again.” Peter and Lyn, Sunshine Coast Qld. (July 2011)

We were very happy with the accommodation (River View 1 apartment) at Zell. We did prefer the ground floor flat as we like to sit out most of the time. Elsbeth was brilliant and everything was spotless so no complaints... I would recommend to anyone going to the Mosel region.” Viv, Australia (Aug 2011)

One of the highlights of our recent trip to Europe was our stay in Zell. The apartment was truly first rate. The unit was spotless and had an incredible view of the Mosel. Very highly recommended! (Andrew and family, USA June 2012)
